UnitingCare Family & Individual Support

At UnitingCare Family Services (UCFS) our staff are trained in confidentiality and are here to provide you with support and information. Some staff have specialised in mediation, while others are trained as Parenting Consultants based on either the Parent Effectiveness Training, 1,2,3 Magic or other parenting programs. The mediation program offers you an alternate way to face your problems and work through any issues you may have with an objective, trained third person.

This means that there is usually a staff member available 'when you need it' who can guide you through the maze of parenting and family relationships, or who will be able to get back to you quickly.

We have been funded by the State Government, Department of Health & Human Services to provide this support free to our community. Our Fathers Support Officer and some of our mediation services have been generously funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund.

We are here to help you develop happy and healthy relationships within your family.

PARENTING TIPS

  1. Stop, make time, and really listen to your child.
  2. Show your child warmth and affection
  3. Be slow to criticise your children - be quick to praise them
    when they do well
  4. Make time to play with your child - simple basic games bring them
lots of enjoyment, just to be with you
  5. Children learn from their parents - try to model kind and polite behaviour
  6. Turn off the TV & make time to talk and eat together as a family
  7. Have realistic expectations - they are children
  8. Be kind to yourself - a happy calm relaxed parent makes for a
    happy calm relaxed home
  9. If you and your partner are arguing, try not to do it in front of the children
  10. Teach your child some boundaries and consequences for their
actions - discipline and punishment are very different.
Discipline means to teach - punishment often intends to penalise
    others
